Increase Male Fertility – A Simple Guide
It takes two to tango and it definitely takes two to conceive a child. This website might focus more on female reproduction and how to improve a woman’s ability to conceive; however, the male’s fertility is just as vital as that of the female.
Female infertility is generally given more emphasis because there can be so many reasons for the condition to occur. Female ovulation, menstruation, conception, and reproduction are very complex processes. The causes of infertility in males are usually more straightforward and simpler to explain.
Improving Male Fertility by Understanding the Male Reproductive Anatomy
Male fertility relies on three main factors:
- the formation of the penis—especially in relation to how the penis releases sperm
- sperm quality, storage, and production
- the ability to either have and/or sustain an erection
Basically, a man has three elements to consider when it comes to conceiving a child: his penis, testicles, and sperm.
The Penis
The penis is the frontline in the act of sexual intercourse. It is the vessel and deliverer of sperm into the female’s vagina which is necessary to achieve fertilization. Therefore, it requires adequate size to get the sperm to the woman’s cervix.
The penis should also be absent of deformities such as hypospadias and epispadias (which are mispositioned urethral openings). Such deformities of the penis disrupt the proper placement of sperm in the female’s vagina. The penis should also maintain an erection during the crucial stages of intercourse, i.e., during ejaculation.
The Testicles
The testicles are considered to be the heart of the male reproductive system. Their main function is sperm production (spermatogenesis) and the production of hormones essential to the male gender.
Disruptions to the production and delivery of sperm from the testes can cause male infertility. Varicose veins (varicoceles), and swelling and fluid (hydrocele) are examples of such conditions. The temperature of the testicles is also vital to healthy sperm production.
The Sperm
Without sperm, no fertilization can take place. Sperm need to be able to reach and penetrate the female’s egg in order to have a successful conception.
A man should be able to produce enough sperm per ejaculate, typically anywhere from 50 to 500 million. The sperm should also be healthy, normally shaped, and able to swim – because reaching the female’s egg is not an easy task.
How to Improve Male Fertility
First of all, a man should get his capacity to reproduce checked by a medical professional such as a urologist. Probably the most important test to have done is a semen analysis to check the sperm for cell count, morphology (shape and structure) and motility (movement).
The most common cause of male infertility is often lack of sperm and poor sperm health. Fortunately, these problems are often easily remedied by actions such as, stopping smoking, not taking drugs, eating better, drinking plenty of water, doing physical activity on a regular basis, and taking nutritional supplements, like vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Supplements to consider are vitamins C and E, as well as zinc, selenium, L-arginine and L-carnitine. If you’ve instituted these changes and still aren’t able to conceive a child, you should seek additional assistance and testing from a medical professional.
